Some have a very established practice already and have strong word-of-mouth referral networks which have developed organically. Others are starting from scratch, perhaps having just left an established firm, and are in the process of developing their own brand. If you want to actively grow your accounting practice you’ll need to consider a few things.

Website

Your mobile friendly website is the first place to start.

  • Does it showcase your brand well?

  • Does it tell ‘your story’ and get your USP across?

  • Do you have ‘Call to Actions’ on your Homepage, such as an eBook download option, so you can build your database?

  • Does it integrate with Xero Practice Manager so you can synch your contacts?

  • Can you update your content easily, and do you have a Blog section you can update with your latest news?

  • Do you have an email marketing module you can use your content with?

If you’re starting a new website you’ll need to begin by registering your domain name and developing your brand including a hi-res logo. Consider the tools you’ll need to succeed when choosing a website provider, and also the best practice SEO guidelines.

Your content will be the key to getting your story across in a way that works for websites, where people skim for relevant content. An experienced web content copywriter can often be a good investment, and will incorporate keywords for SEO benefit too.

Online marketing

Next step is to consider your content marketing strategy, and you’ll need to resource your marketing activity if you're time poor. Quality content is important, and committing to monthly activity is the key to increasing your website traffic and driving growth. Make sure you have Google Analytics set up so you can test and measure to find out what’s working best for your business.

  • Write a regular blog post. Monthly, or even better weekly - annually doesn’t count!

  • Set up your social media channels, and get into a routine with regular posts about what you’re up to, preferably with a link back to your website too. Contribute to relevant industry group discussions and get up to speed with what’s topical for your clients.

  • As you build your database, send a regular eNewsletter to keep your clients informed. This may keep you front of mind for their own business networks too.

  • Run webinars or events, and promote these on your website. Take every opportunity to engage with your community, and learn what your clients need to succeed.

How much do you really want it?

Growing your practice takes time and effort. Want to double your website traffic? You’ll need a comprehensive content marketing strategy in place to achieve that, and execution is the key.
