I recently had the privilege of catching up with Xero Gold Partner Mel Morris. In the Xero ecosystem from the beginning, Mel is CEO and founder of Bookkeeping and Beyond, and Xero multi-award winning training centre Training and Beyond.
As founding President of the NZ Bookkeepers Association, Mel is seeing demand from all business sectors including from new startups. As well as offering training services, Mel is involved with mentoring - including for local Startup Weekend success story Little Yellow Bird. Sharing knowledge and skills is crucial for business success.
“Stick with your knitting. Not too big too fast; scale carefully and have a succession and exit plan in place.”
An early adopter of Cloud, Mel embraced the concept of the digital office several years ago and has worked with many of the ecosystem partners. Some of her favourites include Workflow Max, Sharesight, Receiptbank, Debtor Daddy, Spotlight Reporting, and Unleashed. The benefits include giving clients the opportunity to fully integrate all aspects of the business with their accounting platform as the hub. From her experience, Mel also finds ecosystem partners to be agile and evolving continuously. Startups tend to listen to small business feedback.
“We’re going to see more people ‘staying the ship’ - going through their growth and learning curves, and then consolidating.”
Business owners are increasingly looking to save time, and get advice around business strategy including the best ways to introduce efficiencies, particularly with solutions that are integrated into the Xero platform. And the flow of information still needs to be inputted into systems in some way. Bookkeeping services are evolving, and as Mel says, the role of educator is crucial for business success.
